Our new Firehouse was built after many years of planning and saving,
for a cost of approximatly One point three million dollars. Blades Construction did most of the work.
The size difference and modern improvements were substantial compared to our old station downtown.
At the old station, we really had no room to add on, or grow with the times. It had been moved into from what is now the Town Hall
in the 1930's. That building was then added onto in the 1950's and again in the 1980's.
But since fire equipment tends to get larger with the passing years, we needed to upgrade. This was not just to catch up to the times but also to plan for the future
Of SHVFD and our area as well. We had a lot of support from our community, both locally and at the County level. This upgrade to our
company was also long overdue.
The building we were using was owned by the town of Snow Hill, so we got no help from selling it, and it reverted back
to the town for other uses when we left. We had already purchased some twelve acres on the outskirts of town near the intersection
of Rts. 12 and 113. The land was cleared and this lovely brand new facility of approx. 26,000 square feet, was ready for use around the
early spring of 2003.
We delayed moving into the new building until all our firefighters who were injured in the explosion of 2002
could move in with us all together.
